Dish is one of two satellite-television providers in North America, but it is also an awesome technology company. This year, Dish is offering The Hopper, its whole-home HD DVR which lets you watch four different programs in different rooms at the same time. It also lets you record up to six channels at once using PrimeTime Anytime and also lets you automatically skip commercials in primetime TV on ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC. Does anyone else think it’s funny that Dish uses a TV commercial to advertise a product that lets you skip TV commercials? OK, maybe it’s just me. Anyway, Dish also offers free Blockbuster @Home for three months, which is its alternative to Netflix. And, it gives you premium channels like HBO and Cinemax and Showtime free for three months, as well as a free DVR and free HD for life. That’s a lot of technology and a lot of content.
Maybe you’re out and about a lot. Not a problem with Dish. Its technology lets you watch live TV programming on your tablet, smartphone or computer at no extra monthly cost with TV Everywhere. That’s live sports, news and everything else, wherever you are, whenever you want to watch it. In case you’re wondering, TV Everywhere incorporates the technology acquired in Dish’s purchase of Slingbox.
There are lots of companies that talk about consumers being in control of their own media consumption, but Dish had taken the concept of what I want, when I want, where I want to extremes. For video lovers, there’s quite a lot to Dish about.
