The year of social media just keeps on truckin’. On Tuesday night, President Barack Obama was re-elected for a second term after he hit the magic number of 270 Electoral College votes. That wasn’t the only Obama-related number of significance from Tuesday night, however. Obama’s “Four More Years” tweet almost immediately became the site’s most retweeted tweet ever, with almost 700,000 retweets as of noon yesterday. His victorious Facebook post was the most liked photo on the site ever, with nearly 3.5 million likes in the same timeframe. After dominating the Summer Olympics and the Presidential debates, it made sense that social media followed suit and shined during the election as well. So what’s next for Facebook, Twitter and co.? The sky is the limit, especially considering Twitter didn’t succumb to the dreaded Fail Whale on Tuesday, inspiring the site’s Creative Director Doug Bowman to tweet “RIP Fail Whale.”
