Apple has purchased yet another mapping company, Jessica Lessin reports. This time around, the target is Embark, which builds transit apps for specific cities. After parting ways with Apple for its official Maps application, Apple has been undergoing a rebuilding process to make up for the loss of Google’s data. Recent location company purchases include HopStop and Locationary. When contacted by TNW about the acquisition, Apple responded with its blanket statement about deals: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.” Apple left out transit directions when it launched iOS 6, instead opting to refer users to third-party services. As we reported previously, Embark benefitted strongly from being integrated into the iOS 6 Maps app.
