Search Wars – The Final Frontier

Now everyone wants to help you search your desktop: Google, MSN, Ask Jeeves and Yahoo!  They are all competing to become the brand of choice for all of your searching needs … local, network and Internet.   This is a very important precursor to the way the television industry is about to evolve – let’s watch it closely.

The problem is simple. We all have zillions of files on our computers, LANs and WANs.  We need to find them.  We also need to know what else is out there on the same subject.  Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has been the flavor of the month, buzzword for most of 2004.  Coming into 2005 we are sure to see it grow exponentially.  After all, it is much easier to sell someone something when they are looking to buy it.

Such will be the case with our media files.  You may still think that computers and televisions are not going to converge.  News Flash!  They already have.  There is a computer in your TV set, there has been for years (there’s one in your remote control too).  There’s another one in your set-top box, DVD player/recorder, VHS machine – you get the point.  Sooner than later, we are going to need an interface that allows us to make relevant, personal choices about what we watch and when.  SEO for TV?  It’s just around the corner.  Want to see what it may look like under the hood?  Check out the new desktop search engines from your favorite big gun.
