VERIZON (NYSE: VZ) will boost the speed of its FiOS service. The telco announced that it will now offer 50Mbps in its 16 state territory. Targeting more than 10 million homes, Verizon notes that at 50Mbps, a user can download an HD movie in 15 minutes, or an hour long web video in eight seconds.

SPRINT NEXTEL (NYSE: S) will release its own touch-screen smart phone for $129. Dubbed the Instinct, the new smart phone boasts many of the same features of the iPhone. Sprint had announced that the Instinct would retail for the same price as APPLE’s iPhone, however, by cutting costs Sprint hopes to undermine the iPhone market.

Regency TV exec Robin Schwartz will serve as the president of the new Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Schwartz will head the day-to-day operations at the Harpo-Discovery venture, which is set to take over Discovery Health’s channel in mid-2009.

The New York Post can finally stop their “Carl ‘I Can’t Blog’ Counter” today as the billionaire investor is finally slated to launch the Icahn blog today. The blog is expected to address issues like corporate accountability and the myth of shareholder democracy, rather than the behind the scenes details of the failed Yahoo-Microsoft deal.
