GOOGLE’s (NASD: GOOG) GMail service crashed for a few hours yesterday leaving users unable to access their accounts. The temporary errors were widely reported on TWITTER, which had roughly 100 messages a minute about the lack of GMail service. Google has since fixed the problem and said that they are running a full review of their system.

The Big Hollywood studios are squabbling over “day-and-date VOD.” While TIME WARNER (NYSE: TWX) and SONY (NYSE: SNE), who both have considerable catalogs and distribution methods in place, are in favor of making movies available on VOD day-and-date, VIACOM (NYSE: VIA.B), DISNEY (NYSE: DIS) and NEWS CORP (NYSE: NEWS) are more than skeptical. The three dissenting studios are weary of wounding their DVD sales, which account for more than 40% of a films total revenue.

SENATOR BARACK OBAMA has announced that he will unveil his Vice Presidential running mate via email and text message. Obama, who has effectively used technology to run his campaign, is using modern messaging systems to get the word out as fast as possible. Expect to get a text or email from Obama on or just before August 25.

IAC has set August 21st as the date it will spin off five companies from its roster. On August 12th the SEC will begin to offer “when-issued” trading from HSN, Interval Leisure Group, Ticketmaster, Tree.com and IAC. Regular trading for the newly spun off companies will begin on August 21st.
