Xbox One and Post-Titanfall Depression

Xbox One

Titanfall

Titanfall is great. Like really, really great. It’s the Xbox One’s best game and the most fun I’ve had with any next-gen game. I can’t say whether it’s worth a $450-$500 investment (if you don’t own an Xbox One), but it’s certainly the most convincing argument to jump into the new generation of video game consoles if you haven’t yet.

But if you DO see Titanfall as a reason to drop half-a-grand on a new console, you better really love it – because the Xbox One’s near future is sparsely furnished with new titles.

It’s the same problem that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 had from (roughly) December to March, which I wrote about a couple weeks ago. Titanfall is great, but there’s nothing I’m super excited for between now and May 27 (hey, Watch Dogs!). There will be stuff to play – Kinect Sports Rivals (but I don’t have space for Kinect games), Child of Light and Wolfenstein: The New Order – but I’m already getting antsy.

Titanfall only came out two weeks ago, and I know I can tap that well for hours of more fun. But hitting the level cap for the first time, ranking up to Generation 2 and starting from scratch left me empty. It was like, “Hooray! I did it. What’s next? Doing that same thing… seven more times?” Eh.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes came out last week. I didn’t buy it, though, because I haven’t played earlier titles in the series and you can beat it in 10 minutes (though you probably shouldn’t do that). That’s not exactly a time-filler.

I just want more NEW in my life. I see a $500 piece of hardware below my TV, being used for nothing more than some Titanfall, a little Netflix and MLB.tv. But I’m not going to look at this as a “wasted” two months of gaming; I’m going to take the high road! I have plenty of older games I haven’t touched that I know I’ll love. Bioshock Infinite’s second installment of “Burial at Sea” just came out – so that’s up first. I only put an hour into GTA V, so that’s on the docket, too. Then there’s Arkham City, Arkham Origins, Dishonored, Sleeping Dogs…

You know what? I think I’m good. Thanks for the downtime, Xbox One! Catch you in May for some Watch Dogs action.
