It’s hard, if not impossible, to venture into Samsung’s CES booth and not be enthralled with dazzling array of razor thin prototype OLED screens, one of which,  no doubt will soon be replacing the screen you already have on your wall. But, while I was just beginning to regain my composure after seeing these huge and delectable screens, I wandered into the audio room where Samsung was demoing its latest 360-degree audio setup. At the heart of the “Dolby Atmos® 3D Moving Audio”  system is the  HW-K950 Soundbar.  Soundbars are one of the biggest growing categories of sellers in consumer electronics audio and once I heard the audio I was hooked.  Samsung says this is the company’s “first to feature to Dolby Atmos® technology… and the complete HW-K950 package delivers incredible 5.1.4-channel sound. At just 2.1” high, the HW-K950’s slim and sleek design uses three forward-facing and two upwards-facing speakers”.  The effect is a detailed, subtle, rich sound that doesn’t require ceiling speakers but sounds as if there are many more speakers surrounding you. It’s the perfect setup to go in the cinema room (as if I had one!) to deliver “realistic, cinematic sounds, from an arrow shooting across the room to a hummingbird flying overhead.”  The Soundbar connects wirelessly to the subwoofer and rear speaker units, for a practical solution in any living room.  What’s true 3D sound going to cost you? Even the engineers who designed the system weren’t sure. But we will soon find out as the K950 Soundbar should begin shipping to showrooms this quarter.
