I’ve been a fan of Sphero’s wonderful remote controlled rolling spheres for several years already.  They’ve been creative, even aggressive, in bringing interactive gameplay with physical objects controlled by Android and Apple phones to the game-playing masses. But with the introduction of their toy version of the beloved  Star Wars Droid BB-8, Sphero has hit a grand-slam.  The adaptive personality changes as you play: showing a range of expressions with your interactions. You can give Sphero’s miniature rolling BB-8 Droid voice commands or even create and view holographic recordings which you can post to the web. The toy is $150 so it isn’t cheap but it is available now. Sphero has also introduced a wrist-worn controller that communicates with the BB-8 but I found it to be clunky and inelegant.  I suppose it could have been user error but the young woman who was trying to demonstrate it to me from Sphero didn’t have much better results.  That wrist controller has been delayed and will be available later in the year.  But if you want your own home Droid and a piece of Star Wars (as if there isn’t enough merchandise in your home already) this is a fine little enjoyable  and smart toy.
