My New Mac Pro

Mac Pro

Apple finally added a “Buy Now” button to its Mac Pro page, and no one was more excited to go Mac Pro shopping than me. I have been waiting for this computer for quite some time. It will be a replacement for the four-year old Mac that is the center of my home studio.

Because I use a Mac Pro for production (music, audio, video, graphics, images, etc.), my practice has been to max out the configuration and “take my medicine” at the end. So — and you know where this is going — imagine my surprise as a maxed out Mac Pro came in at a base price of $52,599. Add a monitor, stand, and sales tax for a cool $64,000 Mac Pro.

Obviously, that is not the configuration that I decided to purchase, but the fact that you can configure a Mac Pro with 1.5TB of RAM and a 2.5GHz 28-core Xeon W CPU is amazing. If you’re wondering what you would do with this kind of power, think CGI for movie production, photorealistic animation, and every other computationally-intensive aspect of the state-of-the-art production business.

I know people have been making fun of the price of this computer, but I don’t think it’s funny. I think it’s awesome. In fact, I can’t wait to start creating new sonic and visual landscapes with it. Thanks, Tim Apple… this is going to be fun!
