A new study by the CDC suggests that double masks will more than double your protection. In the laboratory, a surgical mask or a cloth mask alone blocked up to 44 percent of particles, but when a cloth mask was placed over a surgical mask, the combo blocked up to 92.5 percent of the particles. The other important finding: proper fit dramatically improved protection. Tucking and knotting a single mask can increase its effectiveness by more than 60 percent.

The study’s key takeaways: Make sure you wear a mask. Make sure it’s properly tucked and knotted. Two masks (a cloth mask over a surgical mask) will more than double your protection. I’m going to follow the science. I hope you will, too.
