ISPs Helping Fight Copyright Infringement

Major Internet service providers have come to an agreement with entertainment organizations to help fight copyright infringement. ISPs will now issue a series of warnings to customers breaking copyrights, including the suspension of service. While the system isn’t actual law, ISPs hope it will help reduce the violations.     As a broadcast/media technologist and experimental visual/audio artist, what I have found amusing during the decades of discussion about copyright and innovation is the argument that by inhibiting a consumer’s “right” and ability to copy content, that somehow technological innovation is inhibited – therefore, copyright should be ignored in lieu of personal freedom and business stimulus. Yet I have yet to hear anyone say that Intellectual Property/Patents should be afforded the same status – free to use by all. Why isn’t turn around fair play? One can easily argue that the loosening of copyright laws has actually inhibited artistic creativity!
