Sharing patient information between health agencies, doctors, hospitals and patients is a costly and inefficient system. The U.S. government is hoping to change this with pilot programs that exchange health information via a secure Internet-based portal. Being able to share these records online would reduce the tremendous cost of  day-to-day transactions, but changing to the new system will not be without its costs.
