Liwa Desert

Google adapted its Street View Trekker, a colorful contraption for capturing 360-degree photos, to rest on a camel so it could capture new images from the beautifully sparse Liwa Desert in Abu Dhabi. Street View has been to some of the most iconic, beautiful and remote places in the world, but usually Google’s employees capture these images from a car or converted backpack. A camel is certainly different, although of course there are few alternatives for navigating such hot and sandy terrain. It’s a beautiful area and the new Street View images are made all the more captivating by the camel’s contrasting shadows. When your thirst for desert photography has been quenched, be sure to check out Ancient Egypt, the sunken USS Mohawk and the “polar bear capital of the world.”
