What Kodak did and what the newspaper business did and doing mirror each other. CYA businesses (yes, those quarterlies keeping the paycheck for as long as it can for the quarterly putter outers). The newspaper business is the business of news and communication and of course the paper as a means of distribution is part of it, just not only it. The “internet” did not destroy it; management did. The profit structure was based on 80% (oops, I saw some things I wasn’t supposed to). I know there were some successful programs that got cut when the 80 went down to 70% and others couldn’t live up to that but would have brought in enough dough to keep making some real good cookies. (I had buns in those ovens.) The CYA was invaded by the aliens who could not accept other people’s ideas and made sure that the people already in charge was stayed where they were. (oh, the stories). Instead, they literally moved the deck chairs as in switching around accounts. They hired a couple of “digital” people who, if they could be found, has no idea about communications, advertising, journalism and a bucket of cold water thrown in their face couldn’t wake them up and that is rather literal. As long as they didn’t get in the way of the CYAers. Things that could have been done without rocket scientists that would have even made that 80% profit they had sitting doing nothing could not be done. Even I could have accomplished some and made money for all – had the numbers. They kept the digital cameras hidden.
